About Shon Harris

Shon Harris was the founder and CEO of Logical Security, an information security consultant, a former engineer in the Air Force’s Information Warfare unit, an instructor and an author. Shon tragically passed away in October of 2014, leaving a void in the lives of her friends, family and the information security community. In 2015 Human Element was formed by Steve Bennett, a friend and business associate of Shon’s. Steve acquired the rights to Shon’s work to continue Shon’s vision of helping people and organizations defend their critical assets against cyber threats.

Shon Harris authored three best-selling CISSP books and was a contributing author to Hacker’s Challenge, Gray Hat Hacking, and Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) Implementation. Shon developed printed and digital products that are published by McGraw-Hill and Pearson. Shon also consulted for companies in the U.S., including American Express, Warner Brothers, Bridgestone\Firestone, CitiBank, CitiFinancial, AOL, Cisco and many more.

Shon had extensive knowledge and practical experience pertaining to legal and regulatory compliance. She helped some of the largest corporations in the U.S. become compliant with drivers including OCC, SOX, GLBA, HIPAA, and PCI. Shon specialized in risk management, governance and the development of and implementation of security metrics. Shon taught information security to a wide range of clients, including Microsoft, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, National Security Agency, Bank of America, Defense Information Systems Agency, RSA, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and many financial institutions.

Shon was recognized as one of the top 25 women in the Information Security field by Information Security Magazine. She was also the recipient of the Information Systems Security Educator’s Association (FISSEA) Educator of the Year Award, the Women’s Society of Cyberjutsu Influential Woman of the Year Award, and the Information Systems Security Association International (ISSA) Hall of Fame Award.

The Shon Harris Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Computer Science

An education endowment has been established through the University of Texas Computer Science Department with an emphasis in Cyber Security in Shon’s name: “The Shon Harris Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Computer Science”.
